Why is finding the perfect foundation shade such a daunting task? I know we have all been there…swatching shade after shade on the backs of our hands hoping that one will be a perfect match. Here are some of my tricks for helping you find the best shade.
- It is very common to have a different shade of foundation that would better in the winter months and then a second one that works better in the warmer months. This is because our skin needs change with the seasons and of course we get more tan during the summer. I would hone in on what the type of finish (matte, dewy, luminous, natural, etc.) you’re looking for. Are you a matte person all year round? Do you like to be a little dewy during the warmer months?
- Once you have figured out which foundation finish you’re looking for then I would think about what formula you like working with. Liquid foundations can be easier to blend which cream foundations can be provide easier full coverage. I would highly suggest playing around with different foundation textures to see which one would work better.
- Have a little patience. Some foundation oxidized after a little bit of time. I would recommend wearing a foundation for about 10 minutes to see how/if it oxidized. The shade that looked perfect where you first applied may look a little darker now that it has had some time to settle. If this is the case, then you can get a shade lighter and always warm it up with some contour.
- If it doesn’t work and you hate it after a week of usage, just return it to the store and get the correct shade. After a week of wear, you’ll know whether you made the correct decision or if maybe you need the foundation to be a shade darker or lighter.
- Use the appropriate applicator to apply foundation! This one is a big one. Sometimes the difference between a “good” foundation match and a “bad” one can come down to application. Look at the pic below to see how I use specific foundations.
These are tools that I used with different foundations and the finishes I get with each combination!
